Vincent Browne

Magazine Carrier

In 1977 Vincent Browne founded a magazine. Magill[Magill Magazine "About us" (2017) https://magill.ie/about/about-us] was created to publish and talk about Irish politics and current affairs. Many people wrote and contributed to the magazine, including Tim Duffy from the Irish Times and John Simpson from the BBC. It first won a profile nationwide after it produced the diaries of Peter Barry. Peter Barry was the former secretary to the department of justice. The magazine was closed and relaunched in 2004 before it was closed again in 2009. Browne regained control[Pope, Conor (7 April 2017). In 2004 Browne founded and edited Village magazine["About Village" Village Magazine. (12 June 2009) https://villagemagazine.ie/] for many years. The Village Magazine was sued in 2008 by anti-Lisbon campaigner Declan Ganley. In 2010 Browne and his wife Jean decided to sell their home in Dalkey[Broadcaster's Dalkey home on the sea for €3.25m Irish Times, 2010-09-09. https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/homes-and-property/new-to-market/broadcaster-s-dalkey-home-on-the-sea-for-3-25m-1.648674]. They bought the house for £94,000 in 1987. Vincent told The Irish Times, "we've known for years we need to sell. It's far too big, now our daughters are grown. The money needed to pay off debts from village magazine" They sold the house in 2011 to pay off his 1.5 million debt from the village magazine, as well as to supply a pension for himself.
